People arrived by boat, news arrived by boat, fish arrived by boat — and long before roads connected villages, the waterways already had. Not much has changed.
And that may be the nicest thing about it.
Boats pass, neighbours stop by, and the catch finds its way to the kitchen. Lunch stretches a little longer than planned, and somebody almost always asks if there is more curry.
Around here, one helping is rarely enough.
Nobody seems to be in a hurry. Tea has a habit of becoming dinner, conversations have a habit of becoming stories, and tomorrow usually seems willing to wait.
Perhaps the river has taught everyone that.
Each one looks out toward the kaayal in its own way — a verandah, a garden, a jetty within sight.
None were built to compete with the view; they were built around it.
